The traditional study of Yoga, Ashtanga and Hatha Yoga, is the root of Yoga because entire structure of Yoga that we are practicing nowadays, has come from these two types of traditional styles. Now, we can see so many modern style of Yoga are prevailing like Red yoga, Hot yoga,Goat yoga,Power yoga etc. but these are all modern variations that are often specializing ony to the physical aspect of yoga. Until we understand the entirety of what yoga is, we will not have complete information.Studying Hatha and Ashtanga Yoga is one way to understand the roots of ancient yoga. If one has done a complete study of these two, he begins to understand the basics of this vast ocean of knowledge that yoga offers. Studying Hatha and Ashtanga is like knowing the root of a tree, its origin which in turn helps you better understand the fruit it bears or the flowers and leaves it grows.

We here at Om Yoga have different courses at our centre. All our courses have the main base as Ashtanga and Hatha Yoga. Our main focus is to let our students understand the principles in these two fields of Yoga. To explore these fields and to train in these styles, we offer students 200hr, 300hr,or 500hr Traditional Yoga Teacher Training Courses. 

In the 200hr Teacher Training Course, we provide a basic knowledge about Yoga, Ashtanga and Hatha Yoga. In the 300 hr teacher trainig course we dive deeper into Ashtanga Yoga, exploring all 196 sutras as given by Patanjali, entire Hatha Yoga, as written in Hatha Yog Pradipika, Gheranda Samhita. The assimilation of these two courses make up our 500 hr teacher training course.

Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Training Courses In Rishikesh – Haridwar, India

Ashtanga Yoga was introduced by great sage, Patanjali in his text Patanjali Yog Darshan. Patanjali explained this in his 196 sutras. These 196 sutras seems to be very small in number for the complete path of Yoga but they carry a lot of knowledge in them. As these are sutras. Each sutra itself contains so enlarged knowledge that one needs to understand each and every word. And that each and every word of single sutra is in itself very informative. Patanjali had clubbed all different concepts of Yoga prevailing at that time and put it in one text which he had given the name of Patanjali Yog Darshan. As before this, it is believed no written text for Yoga were there. Patanjali had made this first text in written form. And this was the easy way for common people to understand and practice Yoga.

The great sage, Patanjali wrote Ashtanga Yoga in Patanjali Yog Darshan that consist of total 196 verses, which is classified in 4 sections: Samadhi Padh(51 verses), Sadhana Padh(55 verses), Vibhuti Padh(56 verses), Kaivalya Padh(34 verses). In Ashtanga Yoga, all eight branches are important because one must be successful at the current level to move on to the next.The stages upto Pratyahara gradually removes external distractions, whilst the practice from dharana onwards eradicate the disturbing thoughts and psychic manifestation so that mind ceases to function.

Benefits of Ashtanga Yoga :
The benefits may be grouped into four categories: physical, emotional, mental and intellectual benefits. 

  • The physical benefits consist of making the body free of disease, making it light and strong so that it can be a suitable vehicle on the path to freedom. Through yoga the body is made to absorb and retain prana, which extends the life span.
  • The emotional benefits consist briefly in being able to not be a slave to one's emotions but to remain the witness.
  • The process of yoga is the pursuit of knowledge and its aim is the attainment thereof. Firstly, we gain knowledge of external objects and our own body, mind, egoity and intellect and only once that is faultless, do we progress to knowledge of the self.
  • Breathing exercises are given importance in yoga is because it is thought that the pulsating or oscillating of prana happens simultaneously with the movements of the mind (chitta vrtti). Thereby, helps in controlling the activities of mind.
  • Meditation practice leads to experience the stillness of mind.

Hatha Yoga Teacher Training Courses In Rishikesh – Haridwar, India

Hatha Yoga is supposed to have been taught by Lord Shiva who is called Adinatha here. It was later  introduced by Yogi Swatmarama, a sage of 15th century India, and compiler of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. Swatmarama introduces Hatha Yoga as 'a stairway to the heights of Raja Yoga', The word Hatha is a compound of the words Ha and Tha meaning sun and moon referring to Prana and Apana. The world "hatha" means forceful. It is a strong practice done for purification. Therefore, Hatha Yoga is the branch of yoga that concentrates on physical health and mental well-being. It starts from the third limb of Patanjali's yoga. It is integral to the Shiva and Shakti tantra traditions, and part of modern ayurvedic treatment.

Benefits of Hatha Yoga:
 Hatha means two opposite energies – the positive and the negative. Through regular Hatha practice a balance between these two can be learned. The balancing is achieved by practicing asanas, performing breathing techniques and purification practices to cleanse entire systems of the physical body. All the practices of Hatha Yoga focus on activating the Kundalini, life force energy. In other words, Hatha Yoga helps in awakening each and every chakras. Hatha yoga and Kundalini yoga are closely related in the manner that Kundalini yoga is about awakening the chakras and use of pranayama and Hatha is also about using these processes to create a connection between the body, mind, life, nadis and prana.
